| WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES... When a tragic death or serious injury has occurred, a cascade of events and responses are set into motion. After the law enforcement, emergency responders, and medical personnel have completed their roles at a trauma scene, there is often an enormous amount of bio-hazardous waste remaining. This waste needs to be cleaned, sanitized, deodorized, and restored in order to remove all contact with the potentially dangerous biological material. Federal regulations require that this cleaning be completed by trained professionals. OSHA REQUIREMENTS: After a homicide or suicide in a home, office, school or car, biohazardous waste such as blood and bodily fluids must be properly removed, packaged and disposed. Federal regulation 29CFR1910.1030 (otherwise known as OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Rules) require that no employee or cleaning worker be exposed to these wastes without first going through the following:
Only after these five criteria are met can a company’s employee legally clean any location affected by any biological infectious waste, blood, or body fluids. |

| Frequently Asked Questions: Q. Why can’t the family or friends do the clean-up work for themselves? A. OSHA’s standard 1910:1030 is designed to protect anyone including family members from the exposure to blood borne pathogens such as Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and other blood borne pathogens. It is important to note that even the body fluids of a close and trusted relative should not be considered safe to clean up without proper training and equipment. Q. Why offer referrals for the variety of services and not just the cleaning / restoration services? A. When a tragic death or serious injury occurs, a series of events and responses are set into motion which can quickly become organized chaos for family members and friends of the victim . Our referral services are designed to support those closest to the victim during the time period after the traumatic event. Q. Who will pay for these services? A. NC ACT offers free referral services for the family and friends of the victim. The Site Cleaning and Restoration Services are typically covered by insurance and many times by the Victims Compensation Fund. Each of the referral companies provides help filing all paperwork with both Insurance and the Victim Compensation Fund. Family Counseling Services may also be covered by Insurance. Funeral Home rates and payment options are negotiated directly by the family with each Funeral Home. Social Security typically provides a minimal death benefit to the next of kin survivors. Q. How do I contact NC ACT? A. NC ACT offers 24 hour emergency hotline telephone number 919-235-8379 or email to info@ncact.com |
